Date: Wednesday, September 10, 7.30-9.30pm, West Whately Chapel
New England based brothers-act reminiscent of the Everlys, Skaggs and Rice, the Okanes, the Monroe Brothers…folk, country, bluegrassy blend. Great vocal harmonies; maybe my favorite style of music. But they also complement their vocals with their instruments: George on bass; Charles on guitar. They’ll be at the chapel (last performance there for the year!). This will be an evening of relaxed but heart-felt music to help us forget about the storms outside. A little bit of solace and a lot of harmony. They’ll be here in West Whately between gigs at Passim and Cafe Luna. Relax, enjoy, and “let your mind roll on.”
Date: Wednesday, October 1, 7.30 - 9.30pm, Whately Town Hall.
Don’t miss Scotland’s premiere traditional band, showcasing topical songs and original ballads reflecting the rich Celtic musical heritage.
Date: Wednesday, October 29th, 7:30-9:30 pm, Whately Town Hall
A double-header featuring Vasen, the Swedish musical magicians Mikael Marin and Olov Johansson, playing on a variety of stringed instruments, including a silverbasharpa, oktavharpa, three-rowed Nyckelharpa, violoncello da spalla and a blue electric viola. They have been making music together for 37 years.
The Fretles is a nontraditional string quartet from Canada. Since forming in 2011, The Fretless has toured extensively across Canada and worldwide, including Australia, South and North America, and seven European tours—playing historic small halls to prestigious stages such as the Cologne Philharmonic, Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra Hall…They have won a lot of prestigious music awards (just like Vasen).
These two groups might be too much talent, too much entertainment and engagement…but check them out. Be prepared to be amazed.
Date: Wednesday, Dec. 3, 7:30-9:30 pm, Whately Town Hall
Legendary fiddler Darol Anger is at home in a number of musical genres, some of which he helped to invent, and is a member of the original "nuclear" generation of pickers who extended Bluegrass, Jazz, and Classical music to find their common ground; Mr Sun is the latest iteration in that legacy. Joe K. Walsh is one of the foremost contemporary mandolinists, with 4 award-winning years in the Gibson Brothers, 3 solo recordings, and a Berklee professorship. Grant Gordy is a standout in the crowded field of Acoustic Guitar Wunderkinds. Grant's work was quickly recognized for its kaleidoscopic excellence and startling emotion, fusing Jazz, R&B, and Bluegrass concepts to an unprecedented degree. The group recently added the masterful bassist Aidan O'Donnell, a Brooklyn, New York (by way of Scotland) jazz veteran.
They will be playing Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite as rearranged by Duke Ellington, as re-rearranged by Mr. Sun. Their playing will take your breath away. Seriously.
